Governor Beshear has ordered the state Transportation Cabinet to review design plans for more than 600 projects in the 6 Year Road Plan. They'll be looking for ways to scale back the projects to save money. Beshear told reporters that sinking gas tax revenues, which fund roadwork, and rising construction costs has forced a second look at the scope of all projects. Road fund revenues are expected to be abou $100 million less than the $1.3 billion projected in the 2008-09 budget. Beshear cited the expansion of the twin bridges over Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley in Western Kentucky as an example of a project who's scope will be cut back. Transportation Secretary Joe Prather says every project is on the table. But Kentucky Association of Highway Contractors Executive Director Charles Lovorn says the intiative won't have much immediate impact because there's funding for construction of just one new project in this year's budget. Here's the video of the story I did at 5 today. |
