I'll write more later this weekend, but here are my first impressions of the Fancy Farm Picnic: Bruce Lunsford's speech wasn't full of dynamite, but he got through it without stumbling at the hands of the republican hecklers. Read a script - very smart. Mitch McConnell's speech was on par with Lunsford's. But the bar is higher for McConnell. We always expect humor and theatrics from McConnell and there weren't any, so he gets a lousy grade. Never mentioned Lunsford's name, hid behind Bunning who played attack dog. Steve Beshear gave the best speech. Hands down, nobody else was close. The gov spoke off-the-cuff, no notes and and gave a rip roaring butt whipping to McConnell and President Bush. He was also the only democratic speaker to mention Barack Obama, strongly endorsing the Illinois Senator. In fairness, I didn't catch Trey Grayson's speech which other reporters said was pretty good but not on par with Beshear. Funniest moments.....watching the McConnell campaign video kid trying to get tape of Lunsford gladhanding while a Lunsford staffer used a piece of cardboard to try and block the camera's view. Strangest moment . . .some old guy carrying a banana managed to rush on stage as Bunning stood to speak and was whisked away by a state trooper. The trooper said the man was not charged and was apparently trying to hand the banana to McConnell. Huh? All in all, the most boring election year Fancy Farm Picnic I've attended. One political consultant said it right.....everybody is trying so hard just to get through it without any mistakes and without saying something that's not politically correct, that the speeches and antics aren't any fun. |
