Deal Sealed For Electric Car Plant UPDATED

7:43 PM Sun, Aug 24, 2008 |

UPDATE: Governor Beshear has now announced what we reported last night about ZAP cars being built in Kentucky.

Sources tell WHAS 11 News that Governor Beshear will announce on Monday that a deal has been inked between Integrity Manufacturing Inc. of Shepherdsville and the ZAP Co. to manufacture ZAP's electric cars in Kentucky. Sources say the manufacturing deal means a new $84 million plant will be built in Franklin, Ky. to build the small, energy efficient vehicles.

The state has approved up to $48 million in tax incentives for Integrity Manufacturing, depending almost entirely on the number of employees they hire and how much those workers are paid. Beshear has delayed his trip to the Democratic National Convention so he can make the announcement sometime on Monday. Critics have questioned the viability and commitment of ZAP to build the cars in America.
