Lunsford to McConnell "You Must Think Kentucky Voters Are Stupid"

Democratic senatorial candidate Bruce Lunsford finally countered Sen. Mitch McConnell's TV ad which blames Lunsford for rising gas taxes and $4/gallon gas. Lunsford told reporters today that "there's no question Mitch McConnell thinks Kentuckians are stupid" if he thinks they believe the claims in his ad. Lunsford also called McConnell's ad "propaganda" and laid out his 8 point energy plan, including a "gas tax holiday" which his party's presidential candidate, Barack Obama, has called a "gimmick."

Lunsford wouldn't directly answer the question of whether he'd vote for a republican amendment to lift the ban on drilling in ANWR and in areas off the American coastline. But he indicated he'd vote against lifting the drilling ban, saying it won't solve Americas long term energy needs. Here's the guts of Lunsford's plan:

Open up Strategic Reserve
Gas tax holiday paid for with profits tax on oil companies
Develop oil shale
Develop coal to liquids
Fully close "Enron Loophole"
More consumer protections against gas price gouging
Require drilling on already leased lands
Incentives for R and D of alternative renewable energy sources

The response from the McConnell folks:

"It is nice of Mr. Lunsford to finally join the debate on the number one issue facing Kentuckians. Largely, he has endorsed the bill Senator McConnell wrote a month ago, the Gas Price Reduction Act. Where they disagree is the notion that it makes sense to put an 'off-limits' sign around 85% of the outer continental shelf. Doing that raises the price of gas and makes us more reliant on Middle East oil."

To paraphrase a guest on "Comment"... McConnell thinks that Kentucky voters are brilliant. They have elected him 4 times and voted Lundsford down 3 times.
