Got Haire, Where's Boswell? UPDATED

9:09 PM Fri, May 02, 2008 |
Mark Hebert

It looks like Daviess County Judge-Executive Reid Haire is the only democrat actively campaigning for his party's nomination to the 2nd district congressional seat currently held by the retiring Ron Lewis. UPDATE AT THE JUMP

Haire has a TV commercial running in the Louisville TV market and has a pretty good web page. Best I can tell, Sen. David Boswell has neither. I don't believe Boswell has dropped out of the race but, frankly, he could still win the democratic nomination because of his name recognition. Few folks outside Owensboro have ever heard of Haire while Boswell has won a statewide race for Agriculture Commissioner. But it doesn't look like Boswell is actively campaigning for the seat, that could go to the democrats this fall, with a little effort.

UPDATE: Boswell's son vows that his dad has been actively campaigning and raised a "considerable" amount of money since the April 15th reporting period ended. David Boswell Jr. tells me in an e-mail that Sen. Boswell opted not to raise cash while the legislature was in session. And he says there is a Boswell campaign website though it apparently isn't getting much traffic. When I did a google search for a Boswell congressional campaign website, nothing popped up except sites for a candidate from Iowa.

Sen. Brett Guthrie is the republican nominee and will be the favorite. But if there's a democratic tidal wave in November, as there could be, it just might give Kentucky dems a third seat in Congress.

Haire, Boswell make pitches to Chamber

5/2/2008

By Owen Covington

Messenger-Inquirer

Boswell will begin a large direct mail campaign next week, with eight mailings beginning to go out to households around the district and continuing through Election Day.

Boswell said whether he airs television commercials before the primary depends upon his ability to raise additional money.

I just googled "reid haire congress" and did not get any matches either so what is the difference between him and Boswell? Were you a victim of spin?

From what I understand, Senator Boswell has had fundraisers in Nelson, Hardin, Shelby and Daviess Counties in addition to the “dialing for dollars” all candidates go through. Additionally, Boswell has received endorsements from KEA, the NRA, UAW, the Kentucky AFL-CIO and its affiliates, the United Food and Commercial Workers, the United Steel Workers, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Plumbers and Pipefitters and the Owensboro, Kentucky, Council of Labor. This is in addition to Boswell establishing county organizations throughout the 2nd congressional district.

Truth be told, it seems as though Boswell’s perceived shortcomings result not from any failure to raise capital, but from keeping Mark Hebert in the dark regarding the Boswell campaign strategies.

According to the WHAS 11 doctrine of politics, elections should be dispensed with and victory awarded to the candidate with the most money as of the initialcampaign finance reporting deadline.
