Clinton Calls For Vote On Gas Tax Holiday

9:19 PM Fri, May 02, 2008 |

The one thing I've enjoyed about this campaign for president is that all three of the contenders (McCain, Clinton and Obama) have, for the most part, attempted to provide realistic solutions to problems including potential sources of funding for their proposals.

But this gas price stuff has prompted too much pandering for my taste. To his credit, John McCain was the first out of the box with the idea of suspending the 18.4 cent/ gallon federal gas tax in the middle of the summer travel season. But McCain's effort to pander to voters is now being followed by Hillary Clinton. The "gas tax holiday" will provide some relief for motorists who are feeling the pinch from high gas prices. But suspending the gas tax would also mean an estimated $10 billion less in federal road fund monies when there's too little cash to repair and build roads already (just ask the folks in Louisville who are trying to get two bridges built).

The bottom line is....I think it's probably a good political move by McCain and Clinton to focus on gas prices and how to give drivers a break this summer. But it's also a quick fix and a move to pander to voters. To be honest, the guy who has given me the fewest specifics on his other proposals has now earned more respect from this independent voter. Barack Obama says the gas tax holiday is a gimmick. He's right. And remember, as a British visitor to the Kentucky Oaks told me today "I wish our gas prices were as low as yours." They're only going to go higher.
