Williams Backs Off. Deal on Pensions Reached

8:28 PM Tue, Apr 15, 2008 |

Senate President David Williams has apparently backed down from pushing a pension reform bill that government employee groups oppose.

House and Senate leaders held a lengthy closed door meeting in the Capitol building, apparently reaching a deal on the pension bill, according to House Speaker Jody Richards.
Williams had repeatedly said that overhauling Kentucky public employee pension systems was one of his top priorities this session. But there was widespread opposition to the senate's version of the bill, creating little hope that a compromise would be reached before the end of the session at midnight tonight.
