Maysville may be the center of the Kentucky universe this week.....a boys' state basketball title for Mason County on Saturday, George Clooney in town tonight and Bill Clinton tomorrow. But it's not the only place in the Bluegrass State where one can find entertainment. If you enjoy watching two powerful people with the occasional short fuse forced into a room together, the conference committee on the state budget could be a good outpost. Senate President David Williams and House Appropriations and Revenue Committee chairman Harry Moberly will spend most of the week together after accusing each other of various transgressions. By the end of the day today (Monday), Kentuckians will have two very different and distinct budget plans to look at. The Senate will be passing a budget with no new taxes and big cuts to higher education and social services. The House has already passed a budget with a cigarette tax hike and flat lined funding for higher education and most social services. Working out a compromise in the conference committee won't be easy and has led to plenty of talk of another legislative session ending without a budget. The Hilltoppers play UCLA Thursday night in Phoenix. Any tips on how to convince my boss I need to be there to cover it for WHAS-TV? How about an extra "real" reporter covering the Cards in Charlotte? |
