Stream Saver Bill Gets Pooped On
The so-called Stream Saver Bill which is aimed at limiting coal waste in streams failed to get out of the House A and R committee today.
The vote came after coal miners, at the urging of the Kentucky Coal Association, delivered more than a dozen big boxes containing a total of 100,000 signed petitions to the carpet in front of the A and R committee. The petitions called on lawmakers to vote against the bill, claiming it would cost thousands of mining jobs. It appears a handful of legislators decided not to vote yes or no, leaving the bill in limbo, but defeated, for the time being.

Mark, please remember one thing about the coal industry: It lies. Those nifty petitions are a case in point. Did you look at the petition? I did. Each page contained one signature, and the coal industry kindly made a copy of each page for all 29 members of the A and R Committee. My calculator tells me that 100,000 pages divided by 29 is 3,448 signatures. That's a pretty number all by itself, but it sure isn't 100,000.
