Governor Steve Beshear may be wondering why he ran for governor about now. His approval rating has dipped below 50% and more Kentuckians now disapprove than approve of the job he's doing as governor. The latest WHAS11/Survey USA poll shows 46% of Kentuckians approve of the job Beshear is doing, 48% disapprove. In February Beshear's numbers were 52%-38%, so he's seen a 6% drop in his approval rating in the past month. The one hole in the polling numbers is that the number of folks identifying themselves as republicans is grossly oversampled. 41% of people polled said they were republicans, compared to 44% democrats and 12% independents. Young Kentuckians (18-34) give Beshear the highest marks (51-41) while older Kentuckians (65+) give him the lowest (39-51). One breakout of the Beshear poll shows the top issue for the next president. It's a runaway and probably good news for republicans who want to turn attention away from the mess in Iraq. The poll shows 39% of Kentuckians consider the economy the top issue for the next president. Iraq is in second place at just 13%. Here are the full results from the poll. 3 CommentsLeave a comment |

THE GOV. NEEDS TO GET ON WITH GETTING THINGS DONE THAT WILL HELP ALL OF KY. THE GAMING ISSUE IS DEAD AND NOTHING ELSE NEEDS TO BE SAID ABOUT IT. CUT THE SERVICES AND GET ON WITH THE SHOW. ALL OF US WILL SURVIVE!
Pardonme but does it seem to anyone else, as it does to me, that maybe the Gov. may have some of his own money invested in the proposed casino scheme? Why else would he be so bent on pushing this issue other than to line his own pockets? After all, he accepted over 1 million dollars from a group that has spent $7M to purchase land in anticipation of passage and even established an office in northern KY. The same group that is in trouble with regulators in Atlantic City and, closer to home, Metropolis, IL. Perhaps they have a silent partner in the one that is supporting their efforts to get a foot hold in our State. This might be a good project for some real good investigative reporters to follow up on. Also, does it surprise anyone that Harry Moberly is supportive? After all his wife received a 100% raise in salary in her job at EKU when Harry became a paid official ($160,000.00 per year) at that same institution of "higher" learning. He seems to unashamedly line his pockets at the tax payer's expense so why shouldn't he support the Gov. in his efforts to do so as well? Just a few thoughts for those who might be curious like me.
Mark, you're a great apologist for the Beshear administration. You're saying your own poll is inacurate because it oversampled GOP respondents? I'm sure that we could have an isightful discussion about that, but why don't you look at another set of crosstabs.
Take a look at the crosstabs in your poll for male and female respondents. You will find that Beshear's disapproval is higher than his approval among both groups. Now, whether you agree or disagree with the weighting of males/females in the poll, you will have to agree that the combination of both these groups compose all poll respondents.
If that is true, wouldn't it be fair to reason that Beshear's disapproval is higher than his approval in the composite if both groups (composing the whole) poll a higher disapproval than approval. That would be true regardless of the weighting of political party registration.
While some may disagree with SurveyUSA's recorded call methodology, I don't see any issues with their weighting in this poll.
