Fischer, Cassaro Hold First Debate

Bruce Lunsford didn't show up but the Louisville Metro Democratic Club went ahead with a debate featuring the other two democratic U.S. Senate candidates from Louisville, Mike Cassaro and Greg Fischer. Both of the first time candidates were better than I expected.

I was the moderator of the debate, which didn't provide any major disagreements. Both men were generally forthright with their answers to questions and when they weren't, I pushed them to be. Here are a few of the highlights:

Iraq: Both Fischer and Cassaro said, if elected, they want to bring the majority of troops home from Iraq as quickly as possible. Both said they'd be willing to cut funding for the war effort as a way to force a withdrawal of troops.

Health Insurance: Both men claim enough savings can be found in the current health care system to cover more Americans. That was the only funding plan provided by either candidate. There are roughly 47 million uninsured Americans. Fischer favors universal health coverage. Cassaro, who's a doctor, wouldn't go that far.

NAFTA: Cassaro would vote to repeal NAFTA. Fischer would look at it but isn't ready to say that the entire trade agreement needs to be abolished.

Interrogation: Both men say they would vote to overturn President Bush's veto of a bill that would ban water boarding and other interrogation techniques that many Americans consider "torture."

President: When I asked the two democrats who'd they'd rather see at the top of their ticket in the fall campaign, Cassaro said his candidate is already out of the race. He planned to vote for New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson. When pressed to choose between Clinton and Obama, Cassaro hinted that he prefers Obama. Fischer sat firmly on the fence, saying he'd be pleased to run on a ticket with either of the potential democratic nominees for president. And he wouldn't budge from his fence-sitting position when I pressed him for an answer.

By the way, you did a great job last night. And of course, as former president of LWV, you know I know something about the subject.
