Good grief. Kentucky leads the nation in one category that we'd rather not, the increase in inmate population. Apparently other states are way ahead of Kentucky in the move to keep non-violent offenders off the prison roles. 3 CommentsLeave a comment |

We spend $26 million a year to imprison delinquent child support violators. It would make more sense to me to put them in a halfway house and let them work. Now the state pays to imprison the father(1300 of them) and then pays to support their children.
And we are #2, according to ALEC, for our very high government debt service as a percentage of tax revenue.
Well Mark, the week has been interesting in Frankfort, concerning things that have been a large part of my life over the years.. Serving in some capacity since 1993 to late 2008 as a member of the Parole Board, I feel that the "Lexington" newspaper is off track stating that the Fletcher appointees are the reason for the prison population being so high. During this time frame we went from around a 28% parole rate to the 42- 47% rate: number of cases reviewed from 6000 to 16000. It is the system's fault before they get to the Department of Corrections, crimes involving property needs to go to $500 from the present $300 level, non violent Class C and D inmates need home incarceration, more drug programs not more prison beds. Sentencing across the State needs to be more equitable, the list goes on. I hope there is nothing else that gets my attention this Session, but the Session's is still young. Ted Kuster or maybe (Rip Van Winkle), hey maybe I will take a nap and 20 years and wake and all of our Commonwealth's problem will be solved.
