London Calling

It appears Rep. Ron Lewis' handpicked successor at least had a pretty good inkling his boss wasn't going to run for another term in congress a few weeks before the filing deadline.

Daniel London and Lewis have insisted that the 2nd district congressman's decision not to run for reelection was a last minute deal and even London wasn't completely sure what Lewis was going to do until the January 29th filing deadline. But London registered the web site daniellondon.com on Jan. 14th, 15 days before the filing deadline. He says he also got a new P.O. Box in early January. Both the web site and the P.O. Box are now being used by London's campaign for congress, though he insists that wasn't their original intent.

London tells me there was a constituent who had begun harassing and threatening him after London refused to pull strings to get the constituents' VA claim approved. London says he was worried tha the man might set up a web site to harass him or steal his mail at his Hardin County home. That's why London says he set up the web site and new P.O. Box. He says he's using them for his campaign now because it would be foolish to pay for another web site and P.O. Box.

London also says Lewis woke him up with a phone call at 4 a.m. Tuesday morning, the day of the filing deadline, telling London he was driving from Washington to meet London in Frankfort. London says the congressman told him he had some important things to discuss. Lewis and London were still in Frankfort when London's wife carried London's candidacy papers to the Secretary of State's office for filing, about ten minutes before the office closed. State Sen. Brett Guthrie caught wind of what was going on and filed to run against London in the republican primary election just minutes later, before the 4 p.m. deadline passed.

London says he understands the perception that he and Lewis conspired to try and "game" the filing process and keep Lewis' withdrawal from the race under wraps so London would have clear sailing to the GOP nomination. But he insists that neither he nor Lewis knew exactly what Lewis was going to do until they talked on the day of the filing deadline.
