KDP Says Bunning Has Ethics Problem

6:52 PM Tue, Feb 26, 2008 |

The Kentucky Democratic Party is using a story in the Lexington Herald-Leader to claim that Sen. Jim Bunning has an ethics problem, because he's paying his daughter to handle his campaign books.

Bunning told reporters he's done nothing wrong and that his daughter is probably underpaid for her work on his campaign. Here's the e-mail the KDP is sending to supporters:

Dear........
I was reminded today of why the citizens of this Commonwealth need to begin working now to replace Republican United States Senator Jim Bunning, who is up for re-election in 2010.

Bunning has an illustrious history of embarrassing Kentucky with his outrageous behavior and The Lexington Herald-Leader has reported yet another example of it.

Among all 100 members of the Senate, Jim Bunning was exposed for paying the most money in salary or fees to a family member. He has paid his daughter, Amy Towles, over $138,000 to keep track of campaign paperwork.

This information surfaced in a new report by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, whose executive director pointed out, "When you give money to Jim Bunning, is that what you're giving it to, so he can pay his family?"

This type of behavior is unacceptable from Kentucky's elected leaders. Help the Kentucky Democratic Party bring ethics back to our U.S. Senate delegation by contributing today. You can be sure your donation to the KDP will be used to Turn Kentucky Blue in 2008, and let Jim Bunning know that 2010 will be the year Democrats replace him.

Sincerely,

Jennifer A. Moore
Chair, Kentucky Democratic Party

Wow, the KDP can't even win a state senate race with the backing of the current governor in a district where two-thirds of the voters are Democrats. Now they want to jump on Bunning?

Maybe Moore and her "leadership" should concentrate on winning some small races like perhaps assistant dog catcher in Pigeon Roost before moving up to taking on Bunning.

Dear Ms. Moore,

KDP illustrates why I am no longer a Democrat. You left out a few facts. $138,000 was spread over 7 years, less than $20,000 a year. You and Brooke Parker earned much more than that counting money for KDP and the Treasurer's Office. Paul Patton paid his daughter big bucks to run the Democrat Party out of a Capitol office disguised as an Early Childhood Development program. I could go on and on. Do you really want to open up a can of worms about elected officials paying their friends and family out of various funds, a system perfected by Kentucky Democrats? There is nothing illegal about what Bunning is doing. Dems are not going to be competitive for Bunning's seat until he decides to give it up. Why don't you worry about your own party's problems playing "Who's on First" in Frankfort? And as a strong independent Democrat woman, you should be ashamed to let poor Dottie Sims be treated with such disrespect by male members of her own party without calling them on it. You're wasting your time with Jim Bunning and looking foolish in the attempt. Clean up your own backyard.
