GOP Files Complaint Related to Casino Legislation

6:25 PM Tue, Feb 26, 2008 |

Kentucky Republican Party Chairman Steve Robertson has asked the Legislative Ethics Commission and the Attorney General's Office to launch an immediate investigation of House Speaker Jody Richards and two house members for their roles in developing casino legislation.

Robertson bases his complaint on statements and a blog entry by me, claiming folks with ties to the horse industry believe they're being picked on in connection with the casino legislation, but that their concerns might be alleviated with pledges of campaign contributions. Robertson claims there could be violations of state law. A spokesperson for Attorney General Jack Conway says his office won't investigate unless the Ethics Commission finds reason to believe some crime has been committed and refers the matter to the A.G.

None of this reporters writings or statements identified sources. And this reporter has no evidence of any wrongdoing by any legislators or their staffs, only the "not for attribution" beliefs that the November elections are playing a role in some efforts to keep languarge favorable to the racetracks out of the casino bill.

State Rep. Joni Jenkins and Tim Firkins both say potential political contributions have played no role in their opposition to guaranteeing casino licenses for race tracks. Firkins says he hasn't talked to anyone in the horse industry about raising money for him since 2006 and Jenkins says she's actually returned a donation. Also, my sources say there's no truth to implications by some blogs that the F.B.I. has shown any interest in the casino/contributions complaint from the GOP.

Whoa buddy...

You're going to have to do a little better. You call this a not for attribution "belief":

"If you listen to the folks from the tracks, they're saying that they're being essentially held hostage by one faction in the House, folks who want them to pony up and commit X number of dollars for all the House races later on this fall."

IMO, What the Speaker is trying to do is get this issue out of committee anyway he can. That way he can pass it on to the full house. And, if it passes or does not pass, he has done his JOB. Richards is in the HOT SEAT and does not understand how to handle it.
