Beshear Appoints Personnel Bd. Members

Wasn't the Attorney General supposed to be recommending Personnel Board appointees to the governor? Apparently not since Ernie Fletcher left office.

Governor Beshear has reappointed one member and added a new one to the state Personnel Board, which rules on state employee appeals of their job status. If you'll remember, part of the deal between former Attorney General Greg Stumbo and Fletcher was that the A.G.'s office would recommend nominees to the Personnel Board with the governor getting final approval. Beshear Spokeswoman Vicki Glass says that requirement went away when Fletcher left office. I'm not sure that's true, but it could be.

Here's the release from Beshear's office:

Governor Beshear Appoints Members to Personnel Board

FRANKFORT, KY (February 22, 2008) – Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear has appointed Suzanne Cassidy and reappointed Jackson M. Andrews to serve as members of the Personnel Board for terms expiring Jan. 1, 2012.
Cassidy is an attorney and partner with O’Hara, Ruberg, Taylor, Sloan & Sergent in Covington. Cassidy earned her Juris Doctor from Chase College of Law. Cassidy replaces Rosemary F. Center, whose term has expired.
Andrews is an attorney in private practice. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Louisville. He and his wife, Matilda, reside in Louisville.

The Personnel Board is composed of seven members. Five are appointed by the governor and two are elected by state merit employees. Each member serves a four-year term.

The Personnel Board was established to safeguard the merit system for state government employees and to serve as an impartial adjudicator of employee-employer disputes for state government.

Comments

Glass is right. Fletcher actually made his last appointment to the board without a list from the AG. The agreement only applied to members on the board when the agreeement was signed.

That said - someone should do some checking on Cassisdy's involvement with Beshear. I think she had a fundraiser for him

Governor Beshear also appointed Kellie Watson to be the Executive Director of Personnel for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet today. You may remember Watson from this story in the Courier:

O.J. won't sue restaurant for not serving him

By Jason Riley

The Courier-Journal

O.J. Simpson's attorney said yesterday he will not file a civil lawsuit against steakhouse owner Jeff Ruby for turning Simpson away last week, claiming "we could care less" about the snub.

The attorney, Yale Galanter, said the incident has been a non-issue for Simpson and only is in the news because Ruby is using it as a "publicity stunt."

"If we had our druthers, this would have died that night and been over," Galanter said in a phone interview from his Florida office. "We are not pushing it."

However, Galanter said that some Louisville regulatory agencies have contacted him to get information on what happened to Simpson on Derby eve, and that Ruby has brought problems onto himself by picking on the former football star.

"It's not our beef," he said. "O.J. has been going to the Kentucky Derby for years and has always been treated extremely well by people in Louisville. He genuinely appreciates that and wants to continue that relationship."

The Louisville Metro Human Relations Commission confirmed it contacted Galanter yesterday.

Kellie Watson, executive director of the commission, said it is considering filing a complaint against Ruby and needed to get a statement from Galanter and find out if he would be filing his own complaint or lawsuit.

Watson said the commission still is investigating the incident and has 180 days to file a complaint against Ruby.

Ruby could not be reached for comment last night.

In other words, Watson and her followers believe that Ruby kicked Simpson out because he's black...nevermind the idea that Ruby may have kicked him out due to his connection to stories about the murder of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman. Just a thought!

There are certainly plenty of African-Americans who are qualified for this post. Does it have to be someone (of any color) who believes that everything is about being black or white?
