Billy Ray Smith Encouraged to Run for Senate or Congress
Former Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Billy Ray Smith says friends are encouraging him to run for U.S. Senate, but even more on leaning on him to run for the second district congressional seat currently held by Rep. Ron Lewis.
Smith tells me he's leaning against running for Senate because "it would be a super, super task to beat the number 1 republican" in congress. As for a run for congress, the Bowling Green democrat says he's "not leaning one way or the other." Smith thinks Lewis is vulnerable this year. But Smith's not ready to make a decision, saying he's really enjoying what he's doing right now. The former legislator is raising money for the Kentucky branch of the Future Farmer's of America Foundation. He's also "doing a little farming." Smith was a popular Ag Commissioner who didn't play too much politics when he was in office, rarely ticking off anybody. Other democrats who are expected to file to run for the 2nd District Congressional seat are state senator David Boswell of Owensboro and Daviess County Judge-Executive Reid Haire.
