Jack Conway has begun assembling his top staff members. The new Attorney General's Chief Deputy will be Dana Mayton, the University of Louisville's top lobbyist. Mayton was Ky. Revenue Secretary under Gov. Paul Patton. She has a law degree and will now get to put it to use as an attorney and administrator in the A.G.'s office. Mayton takes the post currently held, and ably administered by, Pierce Whites, who has seemingly run the A.G.'s office the past four years because Greg Stumbo has rarely been seen in Frankfort. Every other republican in Kentucky is doing it so Secretary of State Trey Grayson is expected to announce his pick for U.S. president tomorrow morning. Grayson has scheduled an early morning news conference in Lexington. As expected, rumors are flying all over Frankfort on Steve Beshear's picks for his top jobs. In Louisville the talk of County Attorney Irv Maze has already moved past the idea that Maze will have a job in the Beshear administration, to who Mayor Jerry Abramson will appoint to replace Maze as county attorney. Maze has apparently been in discussions with the Beshear folks about jobs as Homeland Security Director and perhaps, Justice Secretary, but nothing has come to fruition. The current head of the Homeland Security Department, Maj. Alecia Edgington, has been asked to hand in her resignation. Edgington is retired from the Kentucky State Police and generally won praise for beginning to pull together a statewide system for dealing with catastrophic emergencies. 4 CommentsLeave a comment |

Edgington did a great job and was very non-partisan and probably a democrat. Asking for her resignation creates serious questions about Beshear's claim that he wouldn't purge the administration. One action does not create a trend, but we'll see...
Attorney General-Elect Conway has chosen one of the Commonwealth's brightest young professionals to serve at the #2 spot. Dana Mayton is loaded with integrity, organizational skills and high work standards. Great Choice!
Can Beshear ask for resignations before his inauguration? Or is it more of an informal thing where the transition team folks let her know she would not be retained?
p4p: "serioius questions" - really?? Those are NON-MERIT jobs, and despite what Beshear said, some positions are too high up the totem pole to be left to Fletcher Administration appointees.
And for anyone within the outgoing Fletcher Administration to cry "foul" over non-merit jobs..... it's just a bit too hypocritical considering the personnel manuevering done under Fletcher to MERIT employees and positions.
