Pence Talks About Future

10:01 AM Mon, Nov 26, 2007 |

Ryan Alessi had a chat with Steve Pence about his future and the possibility of politics playing some role in that future.

The biggest news out of the interview was acknowledgement from Pence that he was at odds with the F.B.I. on the issue of prosecuting Dr. Steve Henry for medicaid fraud. I had previously reported that the F.B.I. agents who investigated Henry were not happy with Pence, when as U.S. Attorney, he elected to file a civil lawsuit and seek damages against Henry, instead of seeking criminal charges against him. In other words, Pence saved Henry from criminal charges and it was not a "political witchhunt" as Henry claimed. The validity of the false billing allegations against him could be questioned but the idea that Pence was "out to get" the democrat Henry was never true.

I have defended Pence here and in other blogs, but that interview left me with a sick feeling when he said he voted for the entire GOP ticket, including for Fletcher. That could just be public relations, but he obviously thought enough wrong with Fletcher over the pardons to make a public split with him during the administration. What Fletcher did to cause the investigation as well as the pardons, was and still is WRONG! Sadly, this makes Pence look like every other politician. He did what was necessary to save his own political hyde. It would have been refreshing had he said it was truly a moral or values split, but he showed his true colors: he was concerned like an attorney, worried about the implications and how it appeared in his regard. Pence was not a victim of the Fletcher Administration: another silent bystander who knew better and said nothing to stop the madness and malfeasance.
