Fletcher Doing Some End-of-Term Interviews

7:13 PM Wed, Nov 28, 2007 |
Mark Hebert

Kentucky's outgoing governor has wisely, in my opinion, decided to do some end-of-the-term interviews.

A few reporters did interviews with Ernie Fletcher today. Apparently some of Fletcher's staff members, and perhaps Fletcher, read my earlier posting about Fletcher refusing to an interview with KET and Bill Goodman. Whether that had anything to do with the decision to grant a few interviews, I have no idea. But the governor did do interviews with Joe Biesk of the AP, Greg Stotelmyer of WTVQ-TV in Lexington and Al Mayo of WHAS Radio. Fletcher's spokesperson, Jodi Whitaker, says that's all of the interviews that are scheduled for now. For the record, I have requested an interview with the gov. PageOneKentucky had a blurb about the interviews on its website.

The first rule of media relations is to not cherry pick who you will and who you won't do interviews. Ernie never allowed himself to develop any kind of relationship with the press, which is probably why he went through so many talented and experienced press people, settling for scraps at the end.

Instead of trying to use the media as the scapegoat for why his administration got into trouble for the Merit System Investigation and cost him the election, he should take a good long look in the mirror because all the problems that cost him a second term are staring back at him.

Unfortunately, today, political figures are taking a page out of the Bush playbook regarding media relations: the secret door at the Capitol being put back in so that Fletcher could avoid inquiring reporters in the hallway, as well as just overall lack of access at any point in time. Having Brett Hall as a mouthpiece for a while aggravated matters. No offense to the media/reporters chosen, but WTVQ is likely 3rd in the 3 station Lexington market, as far as ratings are concerned. Meaning, few people will hear much of the outgoing reflections and revelations by Fletcher. I guess, really, the less I hear and see of Fletcher in the near and distant future, in the end, is satisfying!

Let's just drop the whole issue. Noone wants to hear from the dregs of the outgoing administration. They learned nothing after getting in and learned nothing after Nixon's second inauguration. They brought 30 year-old values, perspectives & ideas to town. The state had outgrown these people before they ever got here.
Leave it. We have a future to manage.
