Beshear's Lead Widens - Survey USA

Steve Beshear has widened his lead over Ernie Fletcher and appears headed toward a double digit win in the Kentucky governor's race. Here's my story from Tuesday when I followed Fletcher and Beshear on the campaign trail.

The latest WHAS 11/Survey USA poll shows Beshear leading Fletcher 60%-36%. That's a four point jump over just one week ago, when Beshear led by 20. The current polling shows 3% of likely voters are undecided.

The breakout on the new poll numbers shows Fletcher's support has fallen in western and eastern Kentucky, gone up in the Louisville area and stayed the same in northcentral Kentucky. Beshear's biggest lead is now in eastern Kentucky where he's mauling Fletcher 67-31. Fletcher has been running a series of radio ads on Louisville radio stations, touting the amount of money his administration has committed to Louisville. That may explain why Beshear's 65-32 lead a week ago is now 61-37.

The polling shows Beshear leading among independents 59-36, voters 50+ 62-35 and women 67-29. Beshear's lead among men has fallen from 18 points a week ago to 11 points (54-43) in the current poll.

The casino question numbers are still pretty steady. The poll shows 82% of Kentuckians want to vote on legalizing casinos (82-14) but many of them will vote "no" if given the chance (49-46 in favor of legalization).

If Fletcher closes the gap in Jefferson County - this race will be close - all republicans get "mauled" in Eastern Kentucky.
