A majority of Kentuckians don't think gambling is morally wrong according to a new Survey USA/WHAS 11 poll. The polling done Tuesday, shows 36% of Kentuckians think gambling is morally wrong while 59% say it's not morally wrong. 500 adults were sampled with a 4.4% margin of error. The most significant break out numbers from the poll show western Kentuckians think gambling IS morally wrong by a 49%-45% margin. The majority of respondents in every other area of the state disagree with folks in northcentral Kentucky saying gambling is NOT morally wrong by a 65%-29% margin. Here are the other interesting numbers: Morally wrong: Republicans 53%-42% Conservatives 60%-37% The poll doesn't really help us get a feel for whether Gov. Fletcher's anti-casino TV ads are working because we can't see whether there's been a trend on the "moral" question about gambling. This is the first time Survey USA has been asked to poll this specific issue in Kentucky. 3 CommentsLeave a comment |

This is the poll I am waiting to see: Do you believe a gambling amendment will get past the Senate? And after the measure fails in the Senate, which taxes will Steve Beshear propose to raise first?
Why is morality even up for a vote? What is moral is moral, and what is immoral is immoral, regardless of what people say or not. Did slavery all of a sudden become immoral after 1865 or so, or has it always been immoral?
Gambling, especially the lottery, is immoral because it plays on peoples' greed and stupidity. The expected value of a Pick Four is only 50 cents on the dollar. If people knew math, they wouldn't play the lottery and they wouldn't gamble to excess.
The news media cannot wash their hands of their complicity. For example, on horse racing (or even who will win the Heismann), one states that a person or horse has 3 to 1 odds, meaning supposedly a 1 in 4 (or 25%) chance of winning. Yet if you add up all the numbers, they always add up to more than 1.00, with the remaining being the bookies' take - thus the media is helping illegal gambling. Even the lottery, where the announcer states that you can win $1,000,000 if you "invest" in a power-play option, is not being confronted, since the average return on power-play is around 45 cents, making it a terrible investment. (If you "invest" your money in your mattress, you will at least get your dollar back.)
Expecting funding from gambling will give the Beshear camp a big quandary. If we spend money on education and should increase the mathematical ability of our Commonwealth, then more people will realize that gambling and the lottery are always losing propositions, and it will decrease state revenue. Watch for mathematics education (especially the study of probabilities) to be de-emphasized and decrease under a Beshear administration.
LEGALIZE CASINO GAMBLING NOW.
