Fletcherites Start Job Hunt

Any of Governor Fletcher's appointees to top posts in state government who haven't begun looking for a new job are probably being unfair to their families.

The chances of Fletcher winning a second term and carrying his current appointees with him are getting pretty slim. But the job hunting problem for appointees in this or any other administration is that the best contacts for a new job are probably in the industry that they're currently regulating, creating a huge conflict of interest. I know of several folks inside the Fletcher administration who are struggling with this dilemma. The current state insurance commissioner is apparently one of them according to a story in today's Lexington Herald-Leader.

But it's not a conflict of interest for Mr. Beshear to go from being an elected official to doing $21,000,000 in business with the state, then to being a lobbyist, and then back to Frankfort again??

That's a revolving door that is going round and round.

Read the state ethics laws at KRS 11A.040. There was many years space between Beshear leaving office as lt gov and doing contract work for KY Central. Even if it hadn't been many years, the way the statute is worded probably his being lt gov wouldn't cause a conflict (since the office had few official duties then, and even fewer now) The problem for the insurance commish is negotiating for employment with an industry she currently regulates.

It is interesting to me that a quotation of "I think I may need a job soon. Latest poll shows 18 pts with 90 days to go," is translated into a newspaper headline of "Insurance chief is job hunting". It sounds like mere speculation, not an engagement in seeking a new career. As for the potential conflict of interest, I'd like to see the documentation that a private company has been solicited by Ms. McPeak or anyone on her behalf with the intent of securing her a position in the industry that she regulates - in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. It's unfortunate that Ms. McPeak appears to be caught in the politics of an intense governor's race. Too bad ethics guidelines aren't enforced with newspaper journalists......
