McConnell on Iraq, Stumbo

U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell is sticking with the "we're fighting them over there so we won't have to fight them here" defense of the U.S. military's build up in Iraq.

McConnell was on WHAS radio with Tony Cruse this morning telling the morning host that the result of the U.S. offensives in Afghanistan and Iraq after 9/11 has been no more terrorists attacks on U.S. soil. McConnell says "noone could have predicted that." Kentucky senior senator says the lack of attacks by Al-Qaeda are "the result of the extraordinary success on the part of our military."

Specifically talking about the problems in Iraq, McConnell told Cruse that "most of the problems over there are being caused by Al-Qaeda." He also says he's extremely disappointed in the Iraqi government for failing to meet the benchmarks set by the U.S. government.

McConnell wouldn't say much about Greg Stumbo's decision to set up an exploratory committee for the U.S. Senate race in 2008. McConnell says the principal problem for his opponent next year will be their support for "Sen. Hillary Clinton's liberal agenda." McConnell says he expects Clinton to be the democratic party's presidential nominee next year. McConnell claims Gov. Ernie Fletcher has "got a great chance to win in November" and brushed off Cruse's question about the possibility that Fletcher could be a drag on McConnell's reelection's chances next year.
