Blogger Mark Nickolas has discovered an old interview with the Kentucky Gazette political newspaper that may come back to haunt Steve Henry. Henry is currently denying allegations that he was illegally raising money and campaigning for governor long before he filed his candidacy papers. A complaint before the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance claims Henry had an off-the-books account that collected nearly $200,000 in contributions, including thousands of dollars in 2006. Henry says it was a legal campaign committee set up to explore whether he should run for U.S. Senate. But as Nickolas (bluegrassreport.org) discovered, Henry's words in 2005 don't appear to match his actions and he may have some serious explaining to do to the Registry. If the Registry concludes that Henry willfully violated Kentucky's campaign finance laws, the likely result wouldn't be a civil penalty and slap on the wrist. It would likely be a referral to a prosecutor for potential criminal action. Here's the link to Nickolas' story http://www.bluegrassreport.org. |
