Lowell Out, Laura In

Lowell Reese is gone as the publisher of the Kentucky Gazette. Reese sold the political newspaper to editor Laura Cullen Glasscock today.

The 66-year-old Reese says the must read for political junkies and insiders was too much work and not enough income. Reese has operated the Gazette since 1995, churning out a conservative-leaning, business-friendly paper that supplied better analysis of election trends and numbers than any other media outlet. The Gazette is also a must read for state employees who enjoy seeing what their bosses and colleagues are earning in the Gazette's annual "Top 500 salaries in state government" feature.

Glasscock is an Oldham County native who's in her second stint as a reporter at the Gazette. In between, she worked for papers in California. She's got a degree in public affairs reporting. Glasscock isn't planning to make any changes at the Gazette but does hope to push its circulation to five thousand, a 500% increase over the current readership.
Reese will stick around for 18 months as an unpaid advisor and continue to own Kentucky Political Report, Kentucky OSHA Journal and two directories. Reese is a former lobbyist for the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and was the executive director of similar groups in South Carolina and Arizona before moving back to Kentucky to start Roll Call newsletter in 1990. Roll Call is now the Kentucky Political Report.
