Baptist and Boozer

State Rep. Arnold Simpson of Covington got a little red faced on wednesday while pushing his bill to allow liquor sales on election day.

Simpson told a house committee that northern kentucky restaurants are losing election day business to establishments across the river in Cincinnati, where booze sales on election day are legal. Simpson's friend, Rep. Jon Draud, told the committee that Simpson is a committed Baptist and a leader in his church, to which one lawmaker cracked "at least he used to be". Simpson feigned disgust, telling his colleagues his bill is not a liquor bill, but an economic development bill. It passed unanimously. It would allow liquor sales after noon on election day in areas that already allow legal liquor sales.
But Rep. Tom Burch warned Simpson that he would be disrupting the entire election process in some counties, where a trunk full of whiskey is used to sway voters.
