Owen-Hatchett Almost Set (updated)

Louisville businessman Charlie Owen appears ready to hook up with former state auditor Ed Hatchett in a run for the governor's office. Owen's friends say he's made the decision to run.

Hatchett tells me he's talked to Owen about being his running mate as recently as thursday. Hatchett wouldn't say which way Owen is leaning. Owen didn't return a phone message. Owen is a millionaire businessman from Louisville who has lost races for U.S. Congress and U.S. Senate and was Ben Chandler's running mate in the 2003 governor's race.
If Owen doesn't run or doesn't pick Hatchett as his running mate, Hatchett could run for another office. When I asked him if he might run for state treasurer, Hatchett would only say "I'm keeping my powder dry". Hatchett might also consider the attorney general's race if Greg Stumbo runs for Lt. Governor instead of seeking reelection.

UPDATE: The dynamics may have changed by this hour. With Greg Stumbo running for Lt. Gov., one has to wonder if Hatchett might decide to run for A.G. instead of going for the number 2 slot. Hatchett is an attorney. One thing's for sure, Stumbo has thrown everyone for a loop and has thrown the governor's race and the trickle-down's wide open.

Hatchett could beat the pants off Jack Conway for Attorney General.

Nice reporting work on these stories, Mark.
