Fletcher's Campaign Tactics

10:51 PM Thu, Jan 18, 2007 |

I don't know what Gov. Fletcher's campaign tactics will be behind closed doors, but in public it's clearly going to be "be nice to Anne Northup".

The governor repeatedly brushed aside any questions that might have gotten him in a war of words with the Louisville republican, even praising her work in congress.
Fletcher says he "welcomed" Northup into the governor's race and said competition could be good for the Kentucky republican party. When asked if Northup would make a good governor, Fletcher replied "that's up to the voters to decide". In fact, that was his pat answer to just about any question about his contest with Northup.

This could be interesting because Northup has never run a campaign that wasn't in aggressive "attack mode" most of the time. In this case, she really doesn't need to "attack" Fletcher, just remind voters of the problems in his administration. Fletcher probably can't win a war of attacks with Northup but he might be able to disrupt her campaign style by playing nice, talking about his administration's successes and picking his spots to attack Northup, similar to what John Yarmuth did in the 2006 3rd District congressional campaign.

He may be playing nice in front of the media, but it looks like behind doors is a different matter.

Did you see the article in the Herald-Leader about Stan Cave's phone call to Bill Farmer the other day, Mark? Does that violate any kind of ethics regulation?
