Govs Race Notes

Here's the latest on the Governor's race.

John Y. Brown III returned a phone call to me on Monday. I'd tried calling him about rumors that he might be Jonathan Miller's running mate. Obviously, that was several days ago. What Brown told me Monday was that he's hoping his former boss, Ron Geary will decide in the next two weeks to join the gubernatorial fray. Brown says he hopes to be supporting a Geary candidacy but didn't give an indication about the odds of Geary running. Brown works for ResCare. Geary is the former C.E.O. who recently bought Ellis Park racetrack from Churchill Downs.

Bruce Lunsford's former campaign consultant, Dale Emmons, told me the same thing he told the Lexington Herald-Leader the other day, that he expects Lunsford to be a candidate for Governor when the January 30th filing deadline rolls around.

Mark Nickolas raised some valid questions about Steve Henry's campaign finances on his blog BluegrassReport.org. Henry tells me he is using monies from his U.S. Senate campaign committee to pay some bills, including that $10,000 purchase of a mailing list from the Kentucky Democratic Party. Henry says he has a letter from lawyers telling him he can legally spend that money from the federal committee, as long as it's not used to "explore" a race for a state government office, i.e. Governor.
Henry says he hasn't done that, hasn't spent any money on polling his chances in the governor's race and hasn't spent money on staff to set up a potential race for governor. The Louisville democrat says he'll provide more information when his FEC report is due at the end of this month. By the way, Henry says a number of folks have expressed interest in being his running mate but the timing isn't right to pick one.

Mark Nickolas did not raise any vailid points about Henry. what he raised was rumors and lies. Just because he has a blog does not make him the keeper of all truths.
