Governors race tidbits

Steve Henry may be really struggling to find a running mate. Several sources say an intermediary with ties to the former Lt. Governor approached Lexington state Rep. Kathy Stein last week about the possibility of her running with Henry.

Stein is bright, funny and loved by the Frankfort press corps because she's not afraid to speak her mind. She's also, arguably, the most liberal member of the Kentucky legislature, and its only Jewish member. It's tough to figure out how a liberal, non-Christian female candidate might help Henry anywhere outside Lexington and Louisville. My understanding is that Stein probably told the intermediary just that. Stein wouldn't say anything on the record. Of course, if Henry could somehow carry Jefferson County big in a crowded democratic primary, he'd surely make it into the new runoff election where anything could happen. Henry is still actively seeking a running mate and still planning on running for governor.

Jonathan Miller has stepped up his search for a running mate. Discussions with Jack Conway apparently didn't produce a political marriage so Miller spent the weekend looking elsewhere, including Louisville.

Conway tells me he's still actively weighing a run for governor. But it would be pricey. Conway has little name recognition outside the Louisville media market.

Bruce Lunsford is telling people he's "90 percent sure" he's going to run, whatever that means. Lunsford hasn't returned my repeated phone calls over the past two weeks. Neither has Ed Worley or Charlie Owen, violating one of the basic rules of good politics - always return a reporter's call even if you have nothing to say. It's also a common courtesy that they should have learned from their parents!!!!

Steve Henry will be fine. At the end of the day, he'll have two running mates.
