Dems for Gov Update #562

4:46 PM Thu, Nov 30, 2006 |
Mark Hebert

Here's the latest on the behind-the-scenes machinations of democrats who are intereested/not interested in the governor's race.

Ben Chandler is out. We knew that on Monday. He told key staffers over the weekend that he was staying in Washington. Chandler's announcement was pushed back as he tried to play kingmaker and put together an alternative ticket. No deal has been struck so Chandler finally decided to jump out of the fray, make his official announcement, and let fellow democrats figure out who's running.

This is what Jack Conway told me Thursday afternoon about his chances of running: He's still weighing his options, one of which involves Jonathan Miller. Conway says he expects to talk to Miller in the next few days about a possible Conway-Miller or Miller-Conway ticket. The problem is figuring out who would run at the top of the ticket. Neither man wants to be No. 2. As Conway accurately assesses it "he's won statewide races but I've been in an $8 million dollar campaign." Conway says there's a good argument for either man heading the ticket and he thinks Kentuckians could get excited about he and Miller running together. Conway says "we're very close on most issues" but he wonders how their personalities might mesh. That's why Conway is hoping he and Miller will get together over the weekend. He wouldn't comment on other potential running mates, saying the situation is still "fluid."

I would prefer a Miller-Conway ticket.

Yes, Ben is out. We officially knew that Monday but anyone with common sense knew that he would never run for governor again long ago. Why would he. He probably has NIGHTMARES from his last run for governor when he got slaughtered by Ernie Fletcher.

I don't know why the chatter is all about the political has-beens? Gosh, are old tired politicians the BEST we can do?

No old tired politicians are not the best we can do. Sadly though it is all we are allowed to accept. The media won't allow new oputsiders a voice and the people are scared to allow any new people a chance.

Get involved and help make that change at all levels.

I have a question which affects Jack's ability to run statewide. I am from Louisville and when I entered UK in 1965 I was shocked at the hatred people out in the state had for Louisville. This was still the case when I entered UL Law School in 1974 which was emphasized by a fellow law student from Madisonville. My question is do you believe this is still the case and is a candidate from Louisville able to be elected these days? Has this changed, and if so, how much?
