Chandler's 50-50

Ben Chandler burned up the phone lines on Monday, calling a number of democratic party supporters to tell them he's still seriously considering a run for governor.

In an interview with Greg Stotelmyer of WTVQ-TV, Chandler said he's still torn on whether to run for governor or pass. He's telling his supporters not to close the door on a Chandler candidacy, it's a 50-50 chance. And there's an outside possibility that if Chandler runs, Crit Luallen would agree to be his running mate. Luallen bowed out of the governor's race and wouldn't say whether she'll run for another term as State Auditor. But she didn't rule out a run for Lt. Governor, perhaps opening the possibility of a formidable Chandler-Luallen ticket. Those two are close. And remember, Chandler could lose the governor's race and keep his seat in Congress. Or he could win the governor's race, run for U.S. Senate in 2010 and turn the keys to state government over to Luallen's experienced hand.

Meanwhile, Jack Conway, Brereton Jones and their wives had lunch on Tuesday. Both men are trying to feel more comfortable with each other, Jones trying to gauge Conway's ability to win a race for governor, Conway trying to figure out if Jones is as clean as he claims he is in case Jones decides to run for governor and wants Conway as a running mate.

I expect some announcement from Chandler early next week because he's beginning to feel plenty of heat to DO SOMETHING!!! MAKE A DECISION!! Otherwise, democrats will start blaming Chandler for any slow fundraising they experience late this year or early in 2007. .
