Can Weaver Win?

Democrats are hoping they'll have the shocker of election night in Kentucky's 2nd Congressional District. There are signs the Republicans are worried about the possibility of Ron Lewis losing to Mike Weaver. Their polls may show a close race but here are some independent numbers that, if accurate, will spell doom for Weaver.

A WHAS 11/Survey USA poll taken November 1st measured the "favorability" of Lewis and Weaver. It wasn't a "who do plan to vote for?" poll, but the numbers should give us an idea of voters sentiments in that race. 506 registered voters were asked "What is your opinion of Ron Lewis?" and "What is your opinion of Mike Weaver". The results are bad for both candidates, but worse for Weaver.

Lewis:
43% Favorable
33% Unfavorable
16% Neutral
9% Unfamiliar

Weaver:
28% Favorable
36% Unfavorable
23% Neutral
13% Unfamiliar

That favorability number for a sitting congressman (Lewis) is horrible, but compared to the numbers for the challenger (Weaver), Lewis is in good shape. It appears the Lewis TV ads attacking Weaver for an unsubstantiated role in a National Guard pay-for-promotion scandal may have worked. It may also have backfired a bit on Lewis, bringing his favorabilities down. Yes, Lewis has refused to debate Weaver, run an attack ad that was worse than most, and generally waged a lousy campaign, but if you believe the numbers, voters are more turned off by Weaver. That'll be tough for the Democrat to overcome on Election Day.
