Fairdale candidates forum #2

The races for Jefferson County Clerk, P.V.A. and Circuit Court Clerk produced some minor fireworks at a forum in Fairdale.

In the County Clerk's race, Democratic challenger Paul Shaughnessy accused Bobbie Holsclaw of failing to pay her entry level employees a "living wage". Shaughnessy told the crowd that Holsclaw should pay new employees more than $18,500 per year, instead of returning more than $2 million dollars in fees to metro government. Holsclaw says paying her employees more would result in cuts to the number of convenient satellite drivers license bureaus that have been established across Jefferson County. She says her employees are a happy family.

In the P.V.A.'s race, Republican John May cited his background as an appraiser and said he's brought professionalism to the job of assessing all Jefferson County properties fairly. He says Democrat Tony Lindauer has potential conflicts of interest because he's been endorsed by V.F.W.'s., unions and other organizations that own property and will look for a break on their tax assessments.
Lindauer says May has conflicts himself. May has been endorsed by the Board of Realtors and is a licensed realtor himself. Lindauer says May will give breaks to his buddies. But Lindauer got the biggest applause when he said the only endorsement that matters is that May was appointed by Governor Fletcher. That brought applause, though I couldn't tell if it was supporters of Fletchers, or detractors who liked Lindauer tying his opponent to the unpopular Governor.

In the Circuit Court Clerk's race, David Nicholson says the best way to clear up the warrants problem and the mistaken release of inmates is to have a unified computer system, linking the jail, courts and police. His opponent, Shelly Knopf, called that a bad idea and said it will never happen. Knopf says court records must be protected, not accessible to folks from police departments and jails.
