Here's four things from the Fletcher/Abramson trip to meet with Ford Motor Co. execs that I found interesting: Fletcher and Abramson took two separate planes to Detroit's Metro Airport. They were going to the same place, same meeting. So why did they fly two separate planes, apparently wasting taxpayer money on jet fuel? As I stated above, Fletcher originally didn't consider the idea of having a joint news conference after the important meeting with Ford officials. Thankfully for him, someone, perhaps Abramson, put a bug in his ear telling the guv he should look gubernatorial and look like he was taking charge of the Commonwealth's efforts to keep the two Louisville Ford plants in business. Abramson and Reagan got a ride from Detroit Metro Airport to the meeting with Ford officials in some sort of sedan made by Mercury. That's a Ford product. Fletcher, Gene Strong and one of the Governor's aides left from the same executive jet terminal in a Chevy Suburban. That's the same kind of vehicle Fletcher uses in Kentucky. To be fair, Fletcher's State Police security team usually makes the travel arrangements, not Fletcher. But driving up in a Ford Explorer, like the one WHAS-TV drove to Michigan, might have left a better impression. Lastly, I know many of you think Ernie Fletcher is into petty politics, based on some of his recent actions. I've never viewed him that way. I think he can put aside partisan politics for the greater good. But taking a separate plane and a separate car to the meeting with Ford executives looked petty. I know Jerry Abramson is a Democrat who's considering a run for Governor, but presenting a united state/city front to save 9000 high paying jobs in Louisville is alot more important than avoiding a couple of hours with a potential political rival. 3 CommentsLeave a comment |

The point is and remains the response to Ford was as shallow and late as it could be by both.
Ford announced their plans in January and we should have been responding then to the possibility. Ford cannot change their minds on the "Way Forward" plan a week in advance of the announcement it takes months to plan and prepare that agenda.
An elected leader knows that this is a simplistic way of doing business. For Abramson and Fletcher to wait until a week before is an insult to the employees, the company, and the revenue provided by both in lieu of taxes and spending in the community.
Matter of fact I cannot think of any one employer that involves themselves and their employees in so many community things through volunteer work, money contributed by employees etc. Juvenile Diabetes research foundation is one and the Ford adopt a child program is probably the most known of these.
This situation should have received attention a long time ago not when it is too late to make changes. The fact is that Ford has already decided what to do.
If they remain open it is because they already were planning it. Of course they will take any added incentives they can get. If they have decided to close no incentives brought forward a week in advance will change that opinion.
To allow these guys any gain from this shallow attempt at making a difference is an insult to this community. We should be making a difference everyday and in this case we had 8 productive months to do that.
One week before is shortsighted and sends the message that we take Ford for granted. And that is the last thing we needed to do.
Typical political play for these guys and one that lacks vision.
Mark,
Always appreciate your blogs. The fact that you typically report news - and sprinkle in a little opinion - certainly diffentiates you from most KY bloggers.
A person can usually find out something that won't be covered by TV/papers by reading your online stuff - and it is appreciated.
