Romney Out

Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was supposed to be in Louisville tomorrow (Aug. 1) to be the keynote speaker at the Southern Legislative Conference. He was also supposed to hobknob with Kentucky Republicans, laying the groundwork for his expected Presidential bid next year. But Romney has cancelled.

Apparently the Governor has some problems with the "Big Dig" in Boston as well as his home state newspapers roasting him for a political visit to Iowa a few weeks ago.
The media accused Romney of putting his presidential ambitions ahead of the safety of Boston motorists who were dealing with the frustration of the multi billion dollar highway project being unsafe to drive.
Anyway, the visit to Kentucky is off. Romney was supposed to talk to southern lawmakers about Massachusetts' health care reforms. And State Senator Dan Kelly and former Republican Party Chairman Ellen Williams had arranged a meet-and-greet for Romney in Louisville. That would have given the former head of the Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Committee a leg up on U.S. Sens. John McCain and Bill Frist in getting Kentucky support for the 2008 Presidential race. But it's not happening.
Williams says she was hosting the party as a favor to Romney's campaign manager, who she's known for some time. Kelly is a Mormon. So is Romney. Williams says she barely knows Romney. And she says her offer to ferry him around Kentucky doesn't mean she'll support his presidential bid and doesn't mean any other big shot republicans (McConnell?) are supporting him either.
