July 2006 ArchivesMassachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was supposed to be in Louisville tomorrow (Aug. 1) to be the keynote speaker at the Southern Legislative Conference. He was also supposed to hobknob with Kentucky Republicans, laying the groundwork for his expected Presidential bid next year. But Romney has cancelled. ...My gut tells me Ben Chandler won't run for Governor in 2007. But there are plenty of Democratic hopefuls who seem to be climbing in Chandler's back pocket every chance they get. ...The Southern Legislative Conference is being held in Louisville this weekend. And a couple of the social events caught my eye......a night at the races with Churchill Downs and a "family day" at the Ali Center with state legislators and their families getting to meet Muhammad Ali. Here's why I think those events are interesting: ...I've been a slacker on the blog. Just back from vacation. Did the Alaskan cruise. Best vacation ever!!!! Gas was $3.29/gal. Alaskans are obsessed with recycling and Vancouver residents love Americans' money but hate George W. Bush and make fun of our fascination with guns. Those are my wacky, worldly observations. Now on to more pressing stuff......politics at home....first up: Abramson. ...Boy, is Jerry Abramson in a tough spot, a political box, if you will. ...Brereton Jones is changing his tune about the possibility of running for Governor. ...Check out the video of an interview with Ben Chandler on July 14 in Louisville. Governor Fletcher was smoking mad after his, and his administration's, poor performance at a news conference to announce a smoking ban in all state buildings. ...There's apparently a serious, or jolly jokester attempt to draft Lonnie Napier to run for Governor in 2007. ...Hey Kids, check out the video clips from David Williams, Jack Richardson and Bill Stone regarding Ernie Fletcher's reelection campaign. There's also a comment or two from Williams regarding the prospect of a Williams for Governor campaign. A couple of notes for you political animals: ...Kentucky Democrats seem split on whether Congressman Ben Chandler should declare his intentions for 2007 this summer, or after the 2006 November elections. ... |
