Run Ben, Run

I talked to Ben Chandler today (June 6). The main topic of discussion was his meeting with Jerry Abramson in Washington. But we also chatted about Chandler's thought process on running/not running for Governor in '07. Here are my observations:

Anyone who believes Ben Chandler has already decided to run for Governor doesn't know what they're talking about. He's wavering bad. Chandler says part of his decision will be made easier after the November elections. If the Democrats take over the U.S. House, I suspect he's likely to stay in Washington. But there are a zillion other factors that Chandler is wrestling with.....family considerations cut both ways....good to be home in Kentucky....bad to have much more pressure and time spent playing Governor.
If he's Governor, who are his allies in the State Capitol? Not Senate Republicans. Not Attorney General Greg Stumbo (Danny Ross is staff member..prosecuted by Chandler and Stumbo was wrapped up in Kent Downey investigation). Not House Democrats (Jody Richards ran against Chandler and lawmakers never liked Chandler). So how much could he get accomplished even if he's elected. He'd run and likely win with a huge mandate from voters. But that could be squandered quickly. Just ask Ernie Fletcher.

Another observation.....if he does run for Governor, he'd like to have Abramson as his running mate. The two have never been "an item". But the way they talked about each other sounds like they're in love.

Chandler genuinely likes his job.....I know, how could anyone want to be a member of Congress? But there's a sincerity in his voice when he says he loves the policy decision making. Chandler can be kind of wonkish, so maybe Congress is his place. Don't count on him running for Governor.
