Pence's Underplay

7:48 PM Wed, Jun 07, 2006 |

I get the sense from talking to Kentuckians that they're upset with Steve Pence, not for refusing to run for another term with Governor Fletcher, but for refusing to resign immediately.

Pence refused the Governor's request to step down and the perception among the general public is that Pence is staying on "for the money". Pence could make three times his $99,000/yr. salary in the private sector and probably will when he leaves state government in December 2007. But right now, he's getting beat up as bad as Fletcher.
An effort to separate himself from the Governor has probably wound up tying Pence to him.

Pence seemed genuinely shocked on Tuesday, May 30th when I contacted him at home. He was shocked when I asked if Fletcher had asked him to resign when Pence called to tell the Governor he wouldn't be his running mate. It seems resigning immediately never occurred to Pence. That's hard to believe. Pence has better advisers than Fletcher and he has better political smarts than the Governor. If I could figure out it would be better for all parties if Pence quit, both Fletcher and Pence should have figured it out, too.

Pence will be Governor by the end of the year. Better him than Robbie Rudolph! I'm a Republican whose glad he didn't quit.
