Pence's Message to Fletcher

9:29 PM Wed, May 31, 2006 |
Mark Hebert

Former Courier-Journal political writer Al Cross has it right. He says Steve Pence is carrying the message to Ernie Fletcher that nearly every other high-ranking Republican in Kentucky wants to send..."it's over, get out of the 2007 Governor's race."

But Fletcher isn't going anywhere. I believe he'll stay in the race until folks flatly say "no" when he asks for campaign donations. And I'm still not convinced that Fletcher is politically dead. Has he been an effective governor? No. Is he smart, with good ideas on how to move Kentucky into the 21st Century? Yes. So if Ben Chandler doesn't run and win the Democratic Party nomination for governor, do the Dems have anyone with better ideas, leadership skills and fundraising ability that Fletcher? Probably. But it's going to be a retread, someone who's been in politics and government with plenty of skeletons in their closet. It ain't as easy for the Dems as it looks.
