Gov and Alternative Minimum Tax

3:10 PM Mon, May 22, 2006 |
Mark Hebert

Those of you who see Governor Fletcher's public schedule probably didn't notice his meeting with the Kentucky Auto Dealers on his May 17th schedule. That's because it wasn't on the Gov's public schedule.

But the Governor stopped off at the auto trade association's office across the street from the east side Wendy's in Frankfort to talk about the alternative minimum tax. It's odd that a sitting Governor goes to a trade association's headquarters to hear them out, instead of them coming to the Governor's Office, but that's here nor there.
The main thing the Governor reportedly told the car dealers is that he's got a compromise bill he plans to present to the legislature in a special session this summer. Fletcher isn't saying what that plan is. But he told reporters he'll call a special session for late June, early July, apparently with, or without, a consensus on the tax.

Small business owners are upset that the Governor and legislature failed to address the alternative minimum tax controversy during the 2006 Legislative session. In a nutshell, changes to the state tax code made in 2005 allows businesses with no net profits to still be taxed. The House and Senate disagree on where the profit threshold should be set to fairly tax businesses.

State Rep. Bob Damron (D) Nicholsville is carrying the water for the House's plan. David Williams and Dan Kelly are working on the Senate's version.
