Senate loves UK

Just some observations and speculation (not all mine) on why the State Senate budget takes money away from all of the other state universities and gives it to UK. The laudable goal is to help UK meet its mission as a top 20 research university and they need cash to compete. But here are some other thoughts, Oliver Stone conspiracy-theory style:

The Senate loves to pick fights, maybe they just want to start one , then watch other players duke it out. The UK versus UL and Research vs. Regionals was always a dandy. Watching them battle over table scraps in Frankfort was always entertaining in the '80s and '90s and a terrific way for Kentucky higher education to move forward.

Sen. Alice Forgy Kerr of Lexington is in a tough reelection fight and needed something to brag about back home. There's nothing better in a tough election battle than "I got UK an extra $17 million in funding but my opponent's Democratic buddies took it away".

Or is it hush money? The Senate proposed several million dollars for a new pharmacy school at Cumberland College. Right now, UK has the only pharmacy school in Kentucky. You think they want to see some competition 90 minutes down I-75? Maybe the extra cash from legislators will make Lee Todd think twice about complaining.

Any thoughts readers? Any snippet of truth to any of these rumblings?

Maybe it is to keep Lee Todd right where he is rather than running for Governor - where neither Democrats or Republicans would be able to control him.
