Recently in Interns' observations CategoryAs I am in my last week of interning with WHAS, I decided to write down some reflections on my experiences here. I have certainly done and seen alot worth mentioning, but I'll attempt to keep this as focused as possible. ...Yesterday I had the opportunity to witness a court martial at Fort Knox. I went as media, but hadn't realized that court martials were open to the public as well. The accused was a soldier- Private First Class James Burmeister, who was charged with going AWOL from his unit stationed in Iraq. Burmeister pleaded guilty to this charge. He admitted that he left without telling his superiors or asking for permission. If that's all someone ... Week two on the job has really flown by. I had the opportunity to put together a package on an unusual story we covered yesterday. Who knew that dachshunds, chihuahuas and jack russell terriers were the most aggressive dogs? According to one study, they are. I don't know that the story changed anyone elses' opinions about dogs in general, but I personally was affected by it. ...
My WHAS internship lasted six weeks. It sounds like a short time, but in the world of news, a lot can happen in six weeks. I’m thinking of it as an accelerated learning program. ...Having been born to a couple of TV journalists, I’ve spent a lot of my days in a newsroom. I’ve met reporter after reporter. Many fit the stereotype – hardened, desensitized, unemotional. How could they not? Their days are filled with reporting crime, disaster, violence, and death. It’s all over the news because, unfortunately, it’s all over our communities. ...So it's just another day in the newsroom when our amazing assignment editor, Sharlene, tells me about a standoff in Indiana and asks if I want to go along. Writing is a CRUCIAL part of TV news. Some people don't realize that because TV a visual medium. It's true...compelling video is what makes TV news unique. However, every journalistic endeavor must have a foundation of good, solid WRITING. And I'm telling you...doing it is a challenge. Here's why... ...It seems so obvious – caring about the story will make you a better story-teller. Duh. But I’m an intern, so I’m allowed to experience it as a revelation....right? ...I went out on a story in Jeffersonville, Indiana today with Rebecca Rector. Basically, this convicted sex offender coaches his son's Clarksville Little League team but he's not allowed to attend any of the team's games in Jeffersonville because of a city law banning sex offenders from public parks. ...Being here for the time that I have, has opened my eyes up to so many things. ...Recently I helped Erik out at the Paul Hornung Golf Scrammble, where something like 30 Hall of Famers and Heisman winners were planning. Some names like Mike Ditka, Deacon Jones, Mike Rozier and Gale Sayers were all there. ...The first couple of weeks working as an intern here at WHAS11 have been very exciting. ...It's a very slow time in the sports world now. With the World Cup over, only Major League Baseball remains, and the college teams are not busy now. ...This is my first entry for the summer. Up to this point, I have been able to see and in some cases practice most of the jobs the sports department has. I have now worked here four weeks and have become accustomed to how things are run. ... |
