Credit Card Fraud hits Home

8:38 PM Thu, Jul 03, 2008 |

Just the other day when news broke that Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway was hit by credit card fraud my first thought was,"Gee, it can happen to anyone." The next thing I know it has happened to anyone. No, not anyone. Someone. Someone I call Mom and Dad.

Platt-form

11:45 AM Thu, Jul 03, 2008 |

O.K. What's it like to work with Rachel Platt? It's a question I hear at least one time every day. I hear it so often I've decided to blog about it here on WHAS 11.com.

Monkey Business

10:55 PM Wed, Jul 02, 2008 |

I have seen it all. I always think that in this business but as far as animals go I think I really have seen it all now. I am working on a series about pet sanctuaries and animal rescues. These places pride themselves on being what's known as "no-kill" facilities. Every animal they house can stay there indefinitely. I traveled to Nicholasville, KY to check out a couple of sanctuaries I found online. The first place is called Primate Resc...

It's the economy

8:42 PM Wed, Jul 02, 2008 |

Nearly every newscast we repeat the phrase "during these tough economic times."
Everyday that line seems to have a deeper more ominous meaning. With every downward tick of the DOW I feel the tremors a little more. My family and I are discussing what we can give up, how we can cut back. I know you are too. But those thoughts lead me to this thought. When we stop spending --- who's not getting the m...

First week in Louisville...off to a good start!

4:28 PM Wed, Jul 02, 2008 |

I've learned more about the reality of the news business in the past three days than I have in my three years of college training that have led up to this internship. Just as I found out earlier this summer when I studied in Italy for 6 weeks, you can learn the language in the classroom but it's another ballgame to be thrown into the mix where you get to apply everything you've been taught.

Gangs and Sports logos

9:54 PM Tue, Jul 01, 2008 |

I first learned about gangs using sports logos to represent their names when an email was forwarded to me. The email had a video clip showing young men flashing sports symbols on their clothes and throwing up gang signs.

GOT MILK?

1:04 PM Tue, Jul 01, 2008 |

Rachel Platt, GMK anchor

Ladies, this one is for you.

A new law that is.

In Indiana it's now the law that new moms must be given the time and place to pump at work.

May not sound like a big deal, but let me tell you a story.

Scott Tichenor Dies: Louisville's Butchertown trailblazer

3:54 PM Thu, Jun 19, 2008 |

A small notice in the obituary page with his picture today announces the death of E.S. Tichenor, Scott Tichenor of Louisville. But his death is more noteworthy than that notice in the CJ. Even though I never met Scott, my wife and I visited his unique antique/interiors store in Louisville's Butchertown neighborhood alot.
Tichenor is a trailblazer. The decision by he and his wife more than 30 ye...

Joe Elliott: Cheap help but still going on WHAS Radio

9:28 PM Wed, Jun 18, 2008 |

I always laugh each time I hear him say it. "Hello everyone and welcome back to the Sunday Morning talk show, I'm Joe Elliott the cheap, part-time help."
Joe, who is blind, may consider himself the cheap help ever since WHAS AM discontinued his full-time nighttime talk show, but he's still as strong as ever. The cutback by Clear Channel Radio happened last November. Joe at th...

Ken Schulz: Finally enjoying a Thundershower

8:07 PM Fri, May 16, 2008 |

Last night on WHAS, Ken Schulz said his goodbye to viewers and all of his friends here at WHAS. After the 6pm news, Ken stayed here for about an hour and a half, taking phone calls from people. The one call that came into the newsroom that surprised the most of us was from Chuck Taylor's son, who still lives in Louisville. Many of us who've been here awhile remember when Chuck would bring his son to work with him and he'd hang out in the...

No one knew longtime WHAS TV Weekend Gardener Fred Wiche better than the guy I've taken a picture of that you see in this story.

His name is Donnie Ruark and he's been with WHAS TV for 36 years now.

He's one of our veteran news photographers and Donnie worked with Fred on a regular basis for 10 years >> Continue reading: "The Weekend Gardener" is now around us 24 / 7

At the Half

3:17 PM Thu, Mar 20, 2008 |

A back and forth game in Anaheim California has Marquette leading Kentucky 33-29 at halftime.

Kentucky got out to a quick start but then cooled down aobut five minutes into the half. At that point Marquette went on a 12-0 run to take a 16-10 lead. The Wildcats had a tough time stopping penetration from the Golden Eagle guards.

Fired Up

2:48 PM Thu, Mar 20, 2008 |

Coach Billie Gillispie is fired up on Kentucky's bench during todays first round NCAA tournament game. After a fast start Perry Stevenson got pulled from the game for not defending the pick and roll and about one minute afterward AJ Stewart got yanked as well. Both got an earfull from Gillispie.

Gametime!

2:26 PM Thu, Mar 20, 2008 |

It's gametime in Anaheim California and Perry Stevenson has cracked the starting lineup.
I'm sitting right behind the Kentucky bench inside the Honda Center as starting lineups are being released. It's the number 11 seed Wildcats and the number 6 seed Marquette ready to go..

March: A Month of Extremes…

5:37 PM Wed, Mar 19, 2008 |

The old adage, “March comes in like a lion… goes out like a lamb”, has certainly started out true this time around. We can only hope that the second half of the saying proves just as reliable.

Long Strange Trip

9:59 AM Sun, Mar 16, 2008 |

What a long strange trip it has been!

When I was asked by our News Director Genie if I was interested in travelling for the SEC and NCAA Tournaments I jumped at the opportunity. I was a Sports guy in Cincinnati for a number of years, and I thought I knew the drill. In reality, I had now idea what was about to come. But really, who could have?

'Cats out Cold

12:21 PM Sat, Mar 15, 2008 |

The Kentucky Wildcats came out cold after their unexpectedly delayed first SEC Tournament game. Scoreless in the first few minutes Joe Crawford finally knocked the lid off of the basket with a three pointer at the 15:50 mark of the first half.

Crazy Night in 'Catlanta

11:31 AM Sat, Mar 15, 2008 |

What a bizarre night in Atlanta Georgia for Kentucky basketball fans. It's now nearly noon on Saturday and the Wildcats still haven't played a game in the SEC Tournament. Tornados ripped though downtown Atlanta with just 2:11 left in the Mississippi State/Alabama game. Kentucky never took the floor. The damage and devastation to both the Georgia Dome and the city is extensive.

My Journey through Fake Bags

6:54 PM Thu, Feb 21, 2008 |

In December, I went to Washington D.C. to visit my best college girlfriends. While sitting at lunch over a big salad and a tall glass of water, somehow the subject of fake handbags came up. It quickly turned into a spirited debate. You see, my dear friend is an attorney. One who studied intellectual property and copyright. She read me the riot act when I asked, "What's the big deal? Who is it really hurting when you buy a fake."
