Put on your goggles, pull on that poncho, and don't wear nice shoes-- you're about to be covered in blood! If that sounds like fun, you should definitely grab a ticket to Louisville's newest (and possibly most outlandish) theatrical performance "Evil Dead: The Musical." If you're a fan of campy, classic horror movies this is a must-see. For starters-- if you're unfamiliar with any of the Evil Dead movies-- it wouldn't hurt to rent the original before checking out the musical. It helps a lot to know the plot and understand what you're getting into... literally. The show has something called a "splatter zone." The producers issue goggles and ponchos to people in the first few rows of seats. You'll need them. You should also use the hood on the poncho. It's there for a reason. I left with a blood-stained face and dripping wet hair. Don't worry, it's not real blood... at least not totally. Did I mention this is a musical? Yes, someone made a campy horror movie into a musical number. Five teenagers (plus a few more) sing about dating, demon-killing, and discount shopping. Between the songs you'll enjoy corny jokes, buckets of fake blood, and even some tap dancing. The performance does not have the sleek stage of the Kentucky Center or the high production value of many Actors Theater shows. If it did-- it wouldn't be true to the movies. The original Sam Rami flick had an embarassingly low budget, and I would imagine this production had the same. However, the cast and crew rose above that (and often embraced it) to bring an entertaining show to fans of horror and musicals alike.
