It's Time to Bail Out

2:57 PM Mon, Sep 29, 2008 |

Hello! My name is Gary, and I'm here to bail you out.
I knew something was really wrong Friday morning.
For the first time, I woke up to the news that my mortgage company was bankrupt.
Good old WaMu had been mercifully swallowed up by JP Morgan Chase.
But don't worry. Just keep paying your mortgage.
Wait a minute. WaMu went belly up because of billions of dollars in bad loans.
Now I have to bail out the bank...

Thoughts while waiting for the lights

12:04 AM Thu, Sep 18, 2008 |

I am among the 139,000 LG&E customers still waiting for power to be restored to my home as of this writing, just after midnight, Wednesday night. As Louisville enters its fourth day of this massive power outage, I can understand people's frustration, apprehension and anxiety as to when the power will be restored. I am less understanding, however, of a number of people who have jumped to conclusions about how the power restoration effort has ...

MOM, GIMME SHELTER AND ICE!

11:40 AM Tue, Sep 16, 2008 |

Almost three days without power and counting. But who's counting, I am!
Counting down to when I get those creature comforts back that I have taken for granted.
Creature comforts like lights and ice!
Oh, Mom --- how about some house guests!

Windstorm 2008: Mayor's News Conference Summary - Reporter's Notebook

1:25 AM Mon, Sep 15, 2008 |

Here are my notes from the Mayor's news conference Sunday. Lots of info in somewhat random order.....

Mayor Abramson took to the podium at 5:12pm in the Mayor's Gallery, calling the windstorm "significant" and "horrendous."

Three times more families lost power in the Ike wind storm than compared with the power outages after the devastating 1974 tornados in Louisville.

LGandE: 237,000 customers without power - 60% of c...

Adrian Sanford Resigns From Dixie Elementary

4:59 PM Fri, Sep 12, 2008 |

The rumors have been circulating for quite a while about Dixie Elementary School's former principal Adrian Sanford. Today, Jefferson County Public Schools finally confirmed some of the information.

$65,991 is at issue with Sanford. The problem, according to Jefferson County Public Schools audit, is that Sanford used the money to hire vendors who weren't qualified to work with students or do other assignments at the school. Vendors a...

I hail from the Motor City. Wait, should I be admitting that right now?

2:45 PM Tue, Sep 09, 2008 |

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick finally got the boot. After eight months of dodging the truth, it finally came out. A sex and perjury scandal is prompting his resignation. So what's next for Motown, now on the list of fastest dying cities?

So Gustav was no Katrina, but it could have been.

2:44 PM Tue, Sep 09, 2008 |

Thank God it wasn't. The issue for a lot of evacuees I talked to during their stay in Louisville is whether they will evacuate for the next hurricane that rolls through the Big Easy.

Of cell phones and crosswalks....

12:12 PM Tue, Sep 09, 2008 |

Some painful irony for WHAS11 photographer Matthew DuPriest today. We are working on a story regarding pedestrian safety after a man was critically injured when he was struck by a TARC bus yesterday. Witnesses say he was not in the crosswalk and stepped in front of the bus. Matthew, however, WAS in the crosswalk today when he was almost struck.

Campaign is Obama's to lose... Here's why he might

12:49 AM Mon, Sep 08, 2008 |

I've received a few e-mails and phone calls from viewers interested in my observations so far on the fall election. It has been so unusual so far, I'm loathe to predict anything. Yet, I believe that it is Barack Obama's election to lose.

Evacuees Going Home

9:34 AM Sun, Sep 07, 2008 |

I have spent the last week and a half covering the Gustav evacuees. During that time I have gotten to know many of them by name and hear their stories. Some of their experiences are heartbreaking and inspiring.
I know there were some arrests at the Expo Center and toward the end, stress was beginning to get the best of some of the evacuees. But I have to say, it was a room filled with a good number of resilient, positive, and kind peo...

Memory Walk 2008

9:11 AM Sun, Sep 07, 2008 |

It is a great pleasure to see more $310,000 dollars raised at Sunday's Memory Walk. This annual event to raise awareness and money for Alzheimer's research is near and dear to my heart.
I lost my grandmother to the disease three years ago, Just two weeks before I started my job at WHAS 11. She had the disease for only five years before she passed away. It was swift and she did not know who I was by her third year into the disease. ...
