O.K. What's it like to work with Rachel Platt? It's a question I hear at least one time every day. I hear it so often I've decided to blog about it here on WHAS 11.com.
And in the interest of full disclosure I must confess, management has been encouraging all of us to further embrace "The Blog" So, this is my effort to both kiss up to my bosses and to answer some questions that may save me some time at the supermarket.
"What's Rachel really like?" they'll say as I stand in the check out line at Kroger. "How much of what you guys talk about is scripted" they'll wonder. The questions usually start fairly general, but eventually after about a 30 second get-to-know-ya, total strangers ask me just about anything.
"Is there anything she says that makes you really angry?" asked a woman collecting my late fee at the library. "How much money does she make?" wondered the checkout clerk at the Dollar Store. But the topper was probably from a woman who stopped my in the middle of a jog around the neighborhood. "I've been meaning to ask you," she said "Do you and Rachel talk when you're in hair-and-makeup before the show? Or, do you save it all for on-air?"
She was disappointed to learn that we don't really have hair-and-makeup. Occasionally I'll bump into Jamie Martin in the bathroom when I'm putting on my contact lenses, and I have seen him pull what looks like cosmetic powder from his pants pocket. But, I can neither confirm nor deny that he wears man-makeup. Rachel puts her game face on in the privacy of the women's restroom. When she emerges her face is ready for two hours of early morning animated expressions.
As her co-anchor my goal is not to provoke the look of disgust until at least the second half hour.
I don't know what time Rachel goes to bed. I sleep at my house with my wife, she sleeps at her house, with her husband. But, I do know that she usually wakes up at 2:00am. I know this because she watches the replay of another newscast at that time every day. I also know that if something is in that newscast that isn't in ours our producers better have a really good explanation as to why.
Much of our show is scripted, but we're at our best when it's not. Finding that balance while serving our viewers is the challenge we face every day. For some reason finding that balance with Rachel and Jamie on GMK comes fairly naturally.
So If you're wondering what it's like to work with Rachel Platt you can now find the answer on my blog. It's great to work with someone who I not only respect, but who also makes me laugh several times every day. Jamie is good for a chuckle now and then as well.
As for the librarian collecting my late fee for the childrens book that was hidden in the dust under our living room couch for two weeks - I NEVER GET ANGRY!!!! And if I do it's probably because of the seven dollar and ten cent fee I'm being charged, and not because of something that my co-anchor said.
And finally, I have no idea how much money Rachel makes. But I do know that she earns every dime. I have never worked with another anchor that is so involved in every single story. She's a hard charging accountable woman who holds herself and the people around her to very high standards.
Good Morning Kentuckiana viewers have seen the results over the last 15 years.
And to management -- This blogging thing is Great! I'm already planning my next entry
on the topic of Christmas Tree Shopping.
It's a good thing I visited the station a while ago or this would have surprised me! Ha, ha.
