As a reporter, I have the unique opportunity to see and hear things that many people never do. I have interviewed parents who have lost their child in the Iraq War, I have interviewed family members in courtrooms when their loved one has been given a death sentence and I have talked to people who lost friends in a factory shooting spree. All of these stories, and more, touched me deeply. But never have I covered a story that impacted me as much as this story. It's not just because the Henderson's were such wonderful people, or because their daughter Emily was so beautiful. It's because of how much they loved their daughter before she was born, after she was born, and now, even in death. The minute you walk into the Henderson's home, you can feel that love. Pictures of Emily are strategically placed around the house. The Henderson children each wear a piece of jewlery that Emily held in her small hands before she passed away. All of the children clearly treasure those small trinkets that remind them of their little sister. Talking with the Henderson's was, in a word, humbling. They lost their daughter, but were still willing to speak with me, with the hope that it will help other parents, in a similar position. They cried and I'm not too proud to admit that I did too. We've all heard the expression, a picture speaks a thousand words. In this case, it could not be more true. |
