As a news reporter and mother, a vacation is not something I really get. So when we had the chance to take an overnight trip, we chose my home state of Tennessee. I am from East Tennessee originally and spent most of my life swimming in creeks, hiking in the mountains, and cave exploring. I have camped in the Great Smoky Mountains and have spent countless days during my life embracing the beauty of Appalachia. It is a big part of who I am. I grew up on bluegrass music with a very musical family and we played that music with the most beautiful backdrop of all...the Smokies.
This vacation was the first time my son had the chance to see the mountains that have been such an inspiration to me my whole life. While he is still a bit too young to truly appreciate them, he did stare in awe as I still do to this day when you see those misty mountains come into view.
We stayed at a bed in breakfast in Sevierville, Tennessee because it allowed us more of a private view of the mountains. It is not as congested at Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge but you are still close enough to both for more family fun.

I also recommend Cades Cove as part of your Smoky Mountain journey and a nice hike to Abrams Falls in The Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

Feel free to email me with any questions as you plan your trip to the mountains. I know the area well and can give you some great advice!
